News on minimum salary
Government Decision no. 937/2018 on the establishment of the minimum gross base salary guaranteed for payment at national level was published within the Official Gazette no. 1045 dated December 10th, 2018.
According to these legal provisions, starting January 1st 2018, the minimum monthly gross base salary guaranteed for payment for an average full-time schedule of 167,333 hours/month will be, without including bonuses or other additional payments, of RON 2.080 (approx. 440 EUR).
Consequently, the minimum hourly gross value will be of RON 12,43/hour.
The Government Decision also introduces one new category of minimum monthly gross base salary: the minimum monthly gross base salary guaranteed for payment for employees which have one-year seniority in the field from which they have graduated, working in positions that are requiring higher education graduates, for an average full-time schedule of 167,333 hours/month. The amount of this wage will be, without including bonuses or other additional payments, of RON 2.350 (approx. 500 EUR).
Consequently, the minimum hourly gross value for this wage category will be of RON 14,044/hour.
Non-compliance with the provisions regarding the minimum monthly gross base salary represents an administrative offence, sanctioned with a fine ranging from 300 RON (approx. 64 EUR) to 2.000 RON (approx. 425 EUR). If the provisions regarding minimum gross salary are repeatedly breached, this deed shall represent a criminal offence.
Last but not least, it is to be noted that together with the increase of the minimum gross base salary, other state benefits which are calculated and granted based on the value of the minimum salary will be correspondingly increased (for example: maternity indemnity etc.). We remind you that all rights and obligations calculated as per the law by reference to the minimum gross base wage shall be established by reference to the amount of the standard minimum wage (RON 2.080).
